I'm building a screened porch over my deck… Also in Howard County. At 2:50 you say according to local building codes all 4×4 are connected to the deck below using simpson strong ties. I can't find any code information regarding these porch posts. Can you point me in the right direction!? Thanks

Chinglish instructions.

With plans from the stodoys work was really fast.

Work goes much faster and nicer with stodoys instructions.

2:35 how are the 6x6s able to be in the ground without concrete? Also I would have used 2x12s for joists.

Correction, hilarious interpretation with youtubes closed caption text…

Hi James, great looking and quality job! I just built a 12X16 deck with a gable roof over it on the back of my house. I'm getting ready to screen it in and was wondering if you can tell me the best type of screen to use? I live in Alabama and we have these tiny little bugs called: "no see'ums" and would like to keep those rascals out if possible. I put screen over my floor joists before putting my deck boards down. Thanks in advance for any help regarding this matter! 🙂

Hi.  Thanks for sharing this video.  I wonder if you could answer some questions?
I was eager to see an angle of the project shot from the left side but it didn't happen.  It would have helped me better understand and maybe clear up my confusion.

The left read of the house bumps out.  Doesn't the rain water on the left side of the gable roof essentially rush down and hit this bump-out?  IE, it isn't shedding away from the house but is essentially directed at the house?

How does the shed roof going intersect with the gable roof?  I don't suppose you have any additional photos?

As I was watching, I was thinking that this was by far the most well constructed and meticulously detailed project of this nature that I'd seen.  Yes, not cheap, but for this level of expertise I wouldn't expect it to be.  Very well done.

I don't get how this screen door cost $60,000.  I just bought a brand new manufactured home, straight from the factory for $68,900.  It was 4 bed 2 bath and 1800 sq ft.  This little porch is no more than 300 sq ft and has screens for walls.  How do you justify charging $60k for this?  That should be $5k max.

John Smith says:

what kind of trim are you using and how thick are you?
