EGR valve didn't bolt to the exhaust, it bolted to the intake manifold and tapped into the exhaust crossover allowing exhaust gases to recirculate back into the intake plenum. Easiest and quickest mod is to put small steel ball from carb kit into EGR vacuum line.

Old cars may have been a little dirty or inefficient but they can run like new if you plug up the EGR valve.

it’s not illegal where i live to remove it. after 25 years in metro atlanta you can remove emission garbage, but outside of metro atlanta you can drive with no cats in a 2020

Great information I thought only diesel engine had egr
