We’ve decided to turn our kitchen dining room area into a more cozy and casual breakfast nook. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at DIYing a custom (semi) built in dining bench, so I used some inexpensive IKEA refrigerator cabinets to make one for our new breakfast nook. I love how it turned out & I’m sharing the how to here!

I have seen this on Pinterest as well it's good to see it in video form. A helpful hint for anyone who would like to do this project, I see cabinets like this at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore all the time for 10 to $15!!!

Did you end up using the rails to secure it to the wall? Or is it free-standing (or sitting)

Such a great idea! I can’t wait to try this. Did you make the pillow on the right? It looks like crochet or macrame or woven. I can’t tell which. Love it!

This is a awesome idea if you already have the stuff. However kitchen cabinets are not cheap and about time you buy the two kitchen cabinets you are already at 150 bucks. It's still a cool diy, just a pricey one.

Am I watching you work outside in a singlet ? Is thst snow I see in the foreground? What ever it is it looks pretty.

Liane Robinson says:

I love the finished bench. It's really handy to have the storage open at the front and not have to lift the seat up anytime you want to get to anything inside. I'd really like to know the overall cost of the DIY against buying a purpose build bench of the same size. I'd like something similar for my hallway so shoes can be stored underneath. Thanks for sharing and showing how easy it can be. 🙂

aleksandra83mercury says:

I like this, it looks great! One question though – how do you open the doors? There are no hooks.
