Brent & Courtney from Gray House Studio show you the latest project in their home gym, exposed edge plywood shelves.
We had a large blank wall in our home gym and we needed a lot of shelving to fill it up. We wanted to make some designs and different shapes with the shelving.
To get started we printed out a photo of our wall so we could draw the shapes and layout of our shelves. Then we took some painter’s tape and taped off the shapes of the shelves on the wall so we could measure them and know how much supplies we needed for this project.
Once we got the layout of the shelves on the wall, we measured each side of the shelves and noted them down on our paper drawing.
Then, we headed to the store and bought a nice big sheet of plywood. This was the good stuff, no knots and the layers were a nice even thickness so when we stack two pieces together all the layers will look even.
Next, using a table saw we had to cut down the big board into the smaller pieces of our shelves. Each piece needed to be double the thickness so we used wood glue to glue two pieces together and used a clamp to hold them together while they dried. We did this for all sides of our shelves.
Once all the boards were glued together and dried, we used a miter saw to cut the ends at a 45 degree angle so the pieces can go together like a picture frame. We used a backing board to prevent tear out.
We applied glue to each corner and then clamped the pieces together using a ratchet strap and scrap wood to make our shapes.
Once all the smaller shelves are put together, we need to make the larger shelf that is going to be split by the two smaller shelves.
We glued up the large shelf and then took it on the miter saw and cut in the areas that need to attach to the smaller shelves.
We then glued and clamped the pieces of the large shelf to the two smaller shelves.
To hang our plywood shelves we marked where the studs were in our wall using blue tape and mark that same spot on the shelf so we know where we need to drill holes.
To anchor each shelf into the wall we added pocket hole screws into each shelf.
Once we attached the shelves to the wall, it was time to decorate them.
