DIY Shed Shelves

DIY Shed Shelves

This is a tale of a store bought shed and a DIYer. It’s no love story for sure. Take a store bought anything, cross paths with a DIYer and sparks are bound to fly. A quick internet search for composite shed shelving showed a system that the manufacturer was selling so you could add vertical storage to your new shed. I quickly realized I was not comfortable with this option. So I decided to design shelves that are free standing. (for the most part) The problem that I run into is the floor panels have a bit of bounce to them. They are simply molded plastic and there is a void between the bottom of the floor panel and the subfloor of the foundation giving it a bit of spring.

This was my solution. Enjoy.

I find that if you keep a trained pet squirrel in the shop with you at all times they keep the ground clear of acorns so you will not have that problem again. I’ve yet to place my work on an acorn since getting Rocky the squirrel.

Excellent tips.

Good video but why with your skills didn't you build your own wooden shed?

Stan well done. You really thought this through. I just purchased two Duramax 00284 Woodbridge 8×10 sheds. Made of plastic like yours but they will have metal for support on the walls. I like the smart and simple ways  you put this together. I too will get my tools out and make some like yours. Thanks for posting! A:::»«:::W:::»«:::E:::»«:::S:::»«:::O:::»«:::M:::»«:::E:::» Thanks! ‹(•¿•)› Blondie

I built 2 of these myself and I am having the same proble. I put in some plastic shelf units in them and everytime I open the shed they fall over. I think I will do this. Thanks

Man, you are a savior. I was wondering how I could re purpose that flimsy shed laying in my garden. Thanks for the awesome idea, I will definitely use it as an inspiration.
I was wondering how stable the whole thing is since you haven't anchored anything to the floor? Instead of adding cabinets, I was thinking about adding a structure to use a s a work bench. I guess once you have the frame, you can add whatever you need.
Thanks again for sharing.

I like the idea of the "U" shape system for structure. Also, Chiefs Kingdom baby!!!

How reliable is the Harbor Freight nail gun?

Joanne Cooper says:

Nice build but curious is your shed at a slight angle or was that the camera wasn't level when you filmed the video.

Bob Derby says:

Excellent video as usual. Glad to see you included your little "helpers" in the project. They will learn some responsibility and pride in helping out.

Tom Denny says:

Hey Stan, when I was hanging cabinets in my shop I had an occasion to hang two side by side like the two in your shed. I turned the left one upside down so the the door was hung on the left side making them open in the center. The shelves were uneven between the two of them but who would notice, or care? I loved the acorn bit. Kids!

Tony Harris says:

Thanks for the shelf build. I've actually got to tackle that one in a short time myself.

Smallest Workshop says:

Nice and straight forward as usual. 👍

StArFuRyZz says:

I made the exact same shelf style in my garage but didn't rip the 2×4 down. I ended up with an 8' long shelf that's 2' deep. Works great and very strong even with 1/2" OSB shelving. Even with a bottom shelf just off the garage floor it's a bit top heavy and I secured it to the wall.

Joe basementwoodworking says:

Nice!! that's how you beef up those plastic sheds!

WoodRodent says:

I can see a future upgrade. A small loft to lay long material like that roll of fencing on so it does not take up a whole shelf. DIYers just keep on DIYing.

Silver Maple says:

OSB is amazing, I made an outdoor step(just piece of osb screwed to 2×6 box frame) leading into my shed. It isn't sheltered from the weather in any way…snow, sleet, rain, ice and/or blazing sun. That was 14yrs ago! Its still going strong. Great shelf build, thanks for sharing!

Nice solution, Stan!

Robin Lewis says:

Great idea attaching it to the stud, I was wondering how you were going to attach to the plastic

I have s little sheet metal shed myself, this would be a great solution to the piles of crap in there. Thanks!
