Garage Lumber Rack – Easy Cheap DIY Project

Garage Lumber Rack – Easy Cheap DIY Project

Here is a quick and simple medium duty lumber rack that I made out of 2×3’s and 1/2 plywood. This is a super easy project that can be useful to anyone from a beginner to the more seasoned builder.

This project used 6 – 2×3’s and 2 1/2 – 10″ strips of 1/2 plywood. Plywood was in the home depot 70% off cull bin (for around $4-5 per sheet) and was warped and cracked in many places… but still good enough for this project:) Not sure how many screws I used but lets say that a 1/3 to 1/2 a box would do it;) I used an assortment of what I had on hand though.

Please check out my other videos for more random homesteading style projects:) Thanks for watching!

Hi I am planning to put some wood battens on brick wall for the brackets to go on like what you did. Can you suggest what type of screws can be used as there are so many types. Wooden battens are 35mm thick. I am using plastic wall plugs for the screws to go in the brick. Should I use partially threaded wood screws/coach screws or should use fully threaded screws to secure the wooden battens? Thanks heaps!

Well, I saw it here. I was thinking that it could also br tweaked as a shelving system.

Frank Rizo says:

Yes. Your design is very good. Easy. I have the materials at hand. Thanks.

I probably viewed 50 or so videos of shop lumber storage racks. I liked your design the best as I had most of the spare stock to make it, and your "pull up". the pull up sold it. I was looking for something that could handle that kind of weight. I cleaned out the garage and made it this weekend. It turned out awesome! Just wanted to say thanks for the video.

Great video! Awesome how u got the brackets to be that strong without screwing them to the uprights! ….. 😀 just kidding but thought I'd mention the missed step (lost in the edit?) for sake of safety! Building mine tomorrow using your design, so thank u!!!

This was an awesome tutorial. Thank you for sharing. Been trying to find a way to organize my lumber pile without complicated plans. And the magnet tip was great. Will be doing this project soon!

at 2:30 when joining two peices you didnt apply glue, does it make difference?

Brandon Scott says:

What size were the 2x3s that you sandwiched between the ply wood to make the bracket part?

Daniel Ramos says:

hey thanks for this vid. just made one and really impressed with this simple design.

Mrs DIY says:

At what distance from the floor did you place that first board?

B Lindsey says:

Gonna follow your lead this weekend – with the same color tools even. Props for the way you used that wood block as a jig to negate your need for measuring the 2x3s going between the plywood hangers-that was sweet.
Many thanks Sir, and God Bless.

fantastic idea
I will be making one of these 👍

João Eduardo B do Nascimento says:

Nice job, pal. Here in Brasil we usually don't have drywall in garages; masonry is more common. Do you think that I can reach the same good result using wall plugs?

Gary Parker says:

Thanks for the tip! Used 2×4's but it turned out pretty decent!!!

What size and length screws or bolts did you use to mount the verticals to the walls?

Phil Pinsky Productions says:

you were right, my mind was blown by that 1st person view. Another great video, love your stuff 🙂

neowolfe says:

think i could install these in a shipping container (connex)?

James Johnson says:

I'm impressed….simple inexpensive and strong…Do you have a maximum depth of the bracket..EX: if I were stacking a lot of molding could I make it 16" or 18" deep and still have plenty of strength?

NotJoe Walsh says:

Used your idea, worked very well. Made the side panels smaller for my application. Used OSB as it was free and already there. Added some pocket screws to the 2 x 4's that I used. Seemed to strengthen things nicely. Thanks again for posting this video.

That is a beauty!

Out of the many, many lumber rack videos, this one seems to be the simplest, easiest and quickest way to build and install them

I'm gonna do it this way.
