I hate using a dog for security only. Many people just leave them outside all alone in all kinds of weather. They need our attention and affection all the time. Dogs should be inside with their people at night. They can still scare a burglar away.
Putting up signs that say "this property under video surveillance" or those adt signs can make burglars think twice. Surveillance cameras are so cheap these days and just about everyone has a smart phone they can watch their house even if it does get broken into
tip # 20 is wrong. should say unplug the door opener. not disconnect it. but crooks can disconnect the door from the lift assembly and easily open the door, so put steel rods through the wheel guide channel (both side of the door). keeps the door from being opened.

that tip about keeping curtains open is very wrong. actual burglars say thats one of the wrost thing you can do, because it allows them to see what stuff you have and what they can take. your main goal is to make the house as unappealing to burglars as possible (make it more work than reward and they will target another house that is easier or has more of a reward. targeted burglary is another issue (ie jewelry stores need to be protected differently than single family residential houses)
