2015 Deck Build – with polycarbonate roof and PVC side covers

In Spring 2015 I built a timber deck with polycarbonate roof and PVC side-covers & flexi-windows. This video follows the build from start to finish.

Thanks a bunch to the team who helped make this possible: Les, Seamus, the crew at Clonmel Covers and of course my wonderful wife!

Needs natural ventilation.

Foua Panapa says:

Do not cover air gaps under the decking with concrete or other types of materials. It traps all the moisture and rots the timber.

Hi, it's a very nice build. how big is it?
Anyone know if you need planning permission in England for this build?

imalaz says:

Hi, thanks for posting this, so helpful. I am planning to stitch together a PVC cover for my deck too, I am searching through the types of PVC's, I was wondering if you have any idea how thick it is? 1mm, 1.5mm, 0,5mm? I checked in http://clonmelcovers.ie/ but they don't specify thickness on their website.

John Dillon says:

Hi ,just to say what a great video,we already have decking with roof sheets &are very interested in side covers, with all recent storms we,ve had very worried bout strong winds against side covers, any information appreciated.many thanks

StealthyMonk says:

Wonderful job. Well documented too, thanks for sharing.

KI B says:

Nice.
with your sweet vowels, you are obviously not from an area where snow is a problem, but your timber in the roof is sufficient for 1,5 meter wet snow. With the spacing you have, 1×5 would have been sufficient. When you lock a piece of wood against buckling, like you have, it can take a tremendous load. It is after all one of the strongest fibers we know of. Norms for design are mostly to avoid flexing of floors, so not to frighten. So when you use wood of familar dimension, remember they are for 200-500 kg pr m2.

Pat Mcneill says:

Ya thumbs up, great job and I've learned from it, I'm on a budget and lately i'm checking out different ideas, but really like your setup, i'm curious on the pricing of the outer covering and how does it hold up to our Irish weather.

sixmagpies says:

Nice job sir. May one know how much you paid for the polycarbonate sheets and alloy bits only?

A brilliant video and very well thought out project. I am currently considering revising my summer house and looking to fit a polycarbonate roof to it. It currently has a corrugated roof, but the ongoing maintenance and appearance is simply not good enough.ย

In your opinion, which brand of polycarbonate roofing sheets is best? I've discovered two brands atย https://www.roofingmegastore.co.uk/roofing-categories/pitched-roofing/polycarbonate.html, Corotherm and Axiome. Whilst the prices vary slightly, I would be interesting in getting your stance on which of these brands (or any other brand) is best? I've fitted a polycarbonate roof before, so am not overly concerned with any differences in ease.

Hattie's Grandaughter says:

A well-thought-out project to be sure with an even better result. I appreciate the know-how and sensible intuition which went into the addition of a new "room" to your home. You certainly will get a lot of use out of the space and the rest of us have gained a lot of insight and knowledge thanks to you and your wonderful video. Thank you

Super video and project. I am currently doing a similar project so I found this very helpful. I have a metal frame up and I'm using 16ml triple wall polycarbonate sheets for the room so I hope they are strong enough. Next summer I plan to panel the front of it with solid sheets of polycarbonate with sliding doors and also possibly remove the sheets during the summer. the flexible canvas looks great though. Can you say how much it cost? It does look well done and hence very expensive. Thanks again
